Chapel of St. John the Divine
Project Type/Date Complete:
Expansion and Renovation - 2008
Total Project Cost:
$2,500,000.00
Originally designed as an eight-bay perpendicular gothic church in 1925, only three bays of the original design and a "temporary" wood-frame chancel and sacristy were built before the Great Depression. More than eighty years later, the Episcopal Church Foundation renewed its commitment to complete the Chapel of St. John the Divine in Champaign, Illinois. After demolishing the wood-frame portion, a new addition was constructed with two higher bays for the nave and chancel expansion and a lower area for the sacristy. Improvements to meet current accessibility standards and central air conditioning were also included as part of the project. The exterior massing, stained glass windows, limestone veneer, and architectural details of the addition are consistent with the original Neo-Gothic architecture. The sanctuary was simply finished with a neutral background to highlight seasonal vestments and celebrations.
