Urbana School District 116's 1950s-era junior high building in Urbana, Illinois, was expanded and renovated to better support its multifaceted curriculum serving a diverse community. Following a successful referendum, 50,000 square feet of new space was added, including a main entrance, administrative and student services offices, a cafetorium, and classrooms for music, art, industrial arts, and family and consumer sciences. The existing 144,000-square-foot building was remodeled, with changes to the floor plan and upgrades to all finishes and systems. Site improvements included reconfigured bus and student drop-off areas and expanded parking for visitors, faculty and staff. The project was phased to allow for continuous occupancy during the two-year construction period.
