Leal Elementary School
Project Type/Date Complete:
Expansion and Renovation - 2001
Total Project Cost:
$7,500,000.00
Originally built during the WPA in the Art Deco style, Leal Elementary School in Urbana, Illinois was expanded and renovated for Urbana School District 116. A 20,000-square-foot addition provided new classrooms for grades 3-5, a library-media center, cafeteria, and computer lab while the existing 45,800-square-foot building was completely renovated. The renovation included modifications to instructional, administrative and support spaces as well as upgrades to original building materials, finishes, and mechanical-electrical systems. Full compliance with accessibility and life safety codes was achieved through new entrance ramps, the addition of an elevator, and modifications to existing stairwells.
