Site and Building Sustainable Retrofit

Project Type/Date Complete:

Planning and Programming - 2009

The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District sought to increase the sustainability of its properties on East University Avenue in Urbana, Illinois. The goal was to reduce environmental impact and operating costs while improving staff health and comfort. The properties included bus storage and maintenance buildings, a corporate headquarters building, and the surrounding site. Strategies for the "greening" of these facilities were developed with implementation based on a cost-benefit analysis and the availability of funds. The study identified improvements to the site's stormwater management, hardscape, landscape, and lighting, as well as to the buildings' envelopes and HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems. These findings were also included in the District's 20-year facilities inventory, maintenance, and capital improvement plan which was being developed concurrently.
