Champaign Police Facility

Project Type/Date Complete:

Expansion and Renovation - 1999

Total Project Cost:

$8,500,000.00

Twelve years after its initial construction, the City of Champaign's police facility required expansion due to extreme overcrowding. A feasibility study was conducted to assess building conditions, develop a space needs program, and conceptualize cost-effective expansion and renovation strategies while maintaining occupancy. The adopted strategy involved the design and construction of a 52,000-square-foot addition around two sides of the original building in order to preserve the adjacent police and municipal parking and a radio communications tower. Following the completion and occupancy of the new addition, the original 27,000-square-foot building underwent a comprehensive remodeling.
